Denmark begins military deployment in Greenland with NATO allies
According to international media, the Danish Ministry of Defense has announced that the military presence is being strengthened in Greenland and its surroundings under “Operation Arctic Endurance”. Several NATO countries, including Germany, France, Norway and Sweden are participating in this operation.
The Danish Ministry of Defense says that the aim of this initiative is to increase defense capacity in the Arctic region, protect critical infrastructure, support local self-government, and improve air and naval operations. However, according to analysts, this military activity is being considered a show of force in the context of the US claim to Greenland.
On the other hand, US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland Foreign Minister Viviane Mottsfeld at the White House, in which they discussed Greenland’s security and cooperation, but serious differences remained on the issue of sovereignty.
After the meeting, the Danish Foreign Minister made it clear that Greenland’s sovereignty is a “red line” on which no compromise can be made, while the Greenland Foreign Minister also said that cooperation with the US is welcome, but Greenland does not want to become part of the US.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump refused to back down from his position despite the failure of the negotiations. He said that Greenland is extremely important for the US’s new missile defense system “Golden Dome” and indicated that the US can consider every option.
Following these statements, there are fears of further escalation in diplomatic and military tensions between Europe and the United States over the Greenland issue.
